Two types of discount
Shopify POS lets you discount in two ways, and you can combine them in the same transaction.Line item discount — one product at a time
Use this when you want to reduce the price of a specific item — for example, tomatoes that are a bit soft, or a jar of honey you want to move at end of day.- Add the item to the cart using PopUp as normal
- In the Shopify POS cart, tap the product name
- Tap Custom discount
- Choose Percentage or Amount
- Enter the discount and tap Apply
Amount discounts apply per unit (as of POS v11.5, April 2026). A 2.00 discount on a line item with quantity 3 = 6.00 off in total. The input field is labelled “per unit” as a reminder. Percentage discounts are unchanged.
Cart discount — the whole order
Use this when you want to give a customer a deal on their entire purchase.- Add all items to the cart using PopUp
- In Shopify POS, tap ⋯ (three dots, top right) in the cart
- Tap Manage discount
- Tap Apply custom order discount
- Choose Percentage or Amount and enter the value
- Tap Apply
Using discount codes
If you’ve set up discount codes in your Shopify admin, you can apply them in POS too.- In Shopify POS, tap ⋯ (three dots, top right) in the cart
- Tap Manage discount
- Enter a Discount code
- Enter or scan the code
Combining discounts
You can combine a line item discount and a cart discount in the same transaction. For example:- Knock $1 per unit off overripe tomatoes (line item discount)
- Then give the whole cart 10% off for a loyal customer (cart discount)
Staff permissions
Staff need the right permissions to apply discounts. In your Shopify admin, go to Point of Sale → Staff and make sure the relevant staff members have:- Apply custom discounts — required for manual line item and cart discounts
- Apply discount codes — required for using discount codes at checkout
Tips for market vendors
- Add an Apply discount tile to your smart grid for faster access — one tap to apply or manage a cart discount without going through the menu. Set this up in Shopify Admin under Point of Sale → POS Customization.
- Percentage discounts are usually simpler at a busy stall — no need to calculate a dollar amount on the fly.
- Line item discounts are great for last-of-the-day pricing — tap the item, apply the discount, move on. The rest of the cart is unaffected.
