PopUp adds items to the Shopify POS cart as custom products. Once they’re in the cart, all of Shopify’s standard discount tools work on them exactly as they would on any other product. Discounts can be applied in Shopify POS cart after adding items with PopUp — not inside the PopUp app itself.

Two types of discount

Shopify POS lets you discount in two ways, and you can combine them in the same transaction.

Line item discount — one product at a time

Use this when you want to reduce the price of a specific item — for example, tomatoes that are a bit soft, or a jar of honey you want to move at end of day.
  1. Add the item to the cart using PopUp as normal
  2. In the Shopify POS cart, tap the product name
  3. Tap Custom discount
  4. Choose Percentage or Amount
  5. Enter the discount and tap Apply
The discounted price shows in the cart. The original price displays underneath so you can see the saving at a glance.
Amount discounts apply per unit (as of POS v11.5, April 2026). A 2.00 discount on a line item with quantity 3 = 6.00 off in total. The input field is labelled “per unit” as a reminder. Percentage discounts are unchanged.

Cart discount — the whole order

Use this when you want to give a customer a deal on their entire purchase.
  1. Add all items to the cart using PopUp
  2. In Shopify POS, tap (three dots, top right) in the cart
  3. Tap Manage discount
  4. Tap Apply custom order discount
  5. Choose Percentage or Amount and enter the value
  6. Tap Apply
The cart total updates immediately.

Using discount codes

If you’ve set up discount codes in your Shopify admin, you can apply them in POS too.
  1. In Shopify POS, tap (three dots, top right) in the cart
  2. Tap Manage discount
  3. Enter a Discount code
  4. Enter or scan the code
The code applies if the items in the cart meet the discount’s requirements. Discount codes apply to the whole cart, not to individual line items.

Combining discounts

You can combine a line item discount and a cart discount in the same transaction. For example:
  • Knock $1 per unit off overripe tomatoes (line item discount)
  • Then give the whole cart 10% off for a loyal customer (cart discount)
Both apply. The line item discount is calculated first, then the cart percentage is applied to the adjusted total.

Staff permissions

Staff need the right permissions to apply discounts. In your Shopify admin, go to Point of Sale → Staff and make sure the relevant staff members have:
  • Apply custom discounts — required for manual line item and cart discounts
  • Apply discount codes — required for using discount codes at checkout
If a staff member can’t see the discount option, check their permissions first.

Tips for market vendors

  • Add an Apply discount tile to your smart grid for faster access — one tap to apply or manage a cart discount without going through the menu. Set this up in Shopify Admin under Point of Sale → POS Customization.
  • Percentage discounts are usually simpler at a busy stall — no need to calculate a dollar amount on the fly.
  • Line item discounts are great for last-of-the-day pricing — tap the item, apply the discount, move on. The rest of the cart is unaffected.
