Each product has a Taxable toggle. When enabled, tax is applied at checkout based on your Shopify tax settings.

Setting taxable status

When adding or editing a product, toggle Taxable on or off. Most food sold at farmers markets is tax-exempt in many states — check your local rules. Prepared foods and non-food items may be taxable.

How tax is calculated

Tax is calculated by Shopify at checkout based on:
  • The product’s taxable setting
  • The tax rates configured in your Shopify store (Settings → Taxes)
  • The POS device location
PopUp passes the correct taxable flag to Shopify POS — you don’t need to calculate tax manually.
Note: The Shopify POS app will retain it’s previous location and use the taxes for that location, if you have changed locals, log out of the Shopify POS app and log back in to designate a new location - taxes rates for the new location will now be applied.

Updating tax settings

To change whether a product is taxable, edit the product and toggle the Taxable switch. Changes take effect immediately on the next sale. For store-wide tax configuration, go to your Shopify Admin → Settings → Taxes and duties.
